It is said that the one way to determine how badly a date went is to check the collateral damage inflicted on local lawn furniture in its immediate aftermath.... uhh, provided you don't actually check up or do any research to see whether that is what anyone's said, ever; in which case, yehh, EVERYBODY says it ALL the time. But oh dear, this story seems to have taken rather a grim turn - this is probably the first time in Gene's history that he's actually been genuinely, properly enraged by something (and considering the circumstances, I'm not surprised!) For anyone reading this in 2003 - which, as I've said, was about three people - there would have been a definite sense of 'Oh No! How could this have happened?!' Without knowing what was going to go down next (they didn't yet have the whole rest of Gene and Jenny's relationship over the ensuing years to reassure them) they would be - and were, from memory - genuinely shocked, and feeling for the poor guy. This is not something I could have done in, say, 1999 or 2000, as I needed to let my characters (and my readers emotional connection to them) evolve and mature to the stage where a story like this would have been possible, and actually affect them in any lasting way. Let's hear it for Drama!
