Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later - as perfect and stable as the pairing between Gene and Jenny is in 2020, and how well-synced they even seemed to be in the previous strips in this very story, waaaaay back in 2003; there comes a time in any budding relationship when everyone hits something known as 'The Mindset Disconnect'. i.e, you suddenly find out that something you're passionate about is the ultimate anathema to your significant other. Perhaps they can't stand to be in the same room as monster truck rallies. Or they vehemently refuse to consume anything that has broccoli in it, even if you spent over an hour preparing it. Or - in the case of Ms. Jenny Masters - they reveal that their tolerance of the wonders of science fiction is a tiny bit.... non-existent. Uh oh! Clearly this isn't a deal-breaker for Gene: he seems perfectly willing (under pain of death) to brave the waters of 'romantic comedy' in order to please his sweetie-pie; but also has no idea what the snap he's going to do for basically the Rest Of His Life if he can't even think the word 'Star Wars' without Jenny's eye-roll radar kicking in. But the question remains: how does Jenny not know yet about Gene's geek credentials, or that he would be offended if she started dissing them? It's entirely possible that Mr. Ellis has been so thoroughly occupied with courting Ms. Masters that he has (shock horror!) simply not gone nerdward-ho to any meaningful degree.... or is making a deliberate attempt to make she doesn't find out. Oh, Gene, 'cause that never catastrophically fails, does it? 'Course not.
