Is it any surprise, really, that Artie, Macy and Ax have no clue as to the origins of Gene's blissful walking-catatonia? At that point in Cosmos' history, their roles in the A-team cast seemed set and predictable, expected, almost: Macy was temperamental and artistic, Artie was commonsensical, Ax was Naive and idealistic, and Gene was just.... weird. He just seemed to be having so much fun indulging the random whims of his almighty Id, usually at the expense of the laws of cartoon physics, that doing something so mature and it's-not-all-about-me as.... falling in love, feels utterly inconceivable from their point of view. And this is why these strips represent such a paradigm shift for the A-team cast, and Cosmos as a whole - alla sudden, we doin' summat different! Yes, Gene had in the past developed disturbing cross-species crushes on attractive female humans (as most cartoon characters seem to do: just look at the Animaniacs or Roger Rabbit), but those minor infatuations were fleeting and simply part of Gene's standard goofy 'toon tool kit; they didn't go anywhere or lead to anything. But based on Jenny's glowing review of Gene's wit, kindness and devotion to her care from the first few comics? He's got it, and he's got it good; for another actual Cosmosian, yet! Indeed, Artie, this IS like Leonard Nimoy showing up in a Star Wars movie - totally unexpected, character development-y, and switching the train of your lives onto a completely new track....
