It's always interesting to see how a piece of artwork changes between its initial concept and the final product, and the contrast could not be more marked in the case of the above sketch; done in development for Artie and Gene as pixel art during the 'Draw your Characters as' art challenge on the forums. It features not only Artie and Gene, Mario-style blocks, power-ups and fireballs; but also a wider range of enemy characters than I was able to fit into the final scene - everything is drawn in my usual style, but when I came to rendering it all up in Adobe illustrator, I realised I'd have to simplify things down.... rather a lot. To 'realistically' capture Artie and Gene would have required a pixel grid with thousands of teeny tiny little squares, not something I really had time (at that time) to micromanage myself into. And given that they were supposed to be blocky, 8-bit style sprites, that much detail simply wasn't necessary - so the sketches ultimately served more as a rough guide to basic shapes and proportions; with the pixel art doing its own thing as it was gridded in over the top. Still, it was useful to have it, and now it can take pride of place in the art gallery!
