It always fascinates me where the whole idea about cats 'singing' on fences and walls at night came from - my suspicion is that if he didn't directly start it, then Garfield's Jim Davis certainly contributed to making the trope so widespread; by having his fat cat perform so many impromptu midnight concerts over the years, to the general condemnation of his neighbours. I've certainly heard plenty of nocturnal vocalisations from local felines, but they're sure not singing: they're staring each other down and psyching each other out with threatening yowls, as a precursor to launching themselves at each other and initiating World War 3! Still, Murph is clearly the literal-singing model of cat, as evidenced by Gene's zero-star review of his performance; and is proud to continue the tradition of misinformed cartoon felines everywhere! It is also telling that he doesn't have to say one single word for Gene to realise - with the sound of the other shoe dropping with an echoing 'crunch' - that he may have just made himself look like rather an idiot....

I've seen & heard a male cat singing to a female once in my life. It was really weird: definitely music but definitely not human music, nor bird. Alien! :D
