Although there are a huge volume of very good and even great strips in the Old School era (more so with each year you go forward from 1999), there are still ones that show that, even after several years of doing Cosmos, I was still learning my craft. Such as the case with this one: there's nothing wrong with the set-up, or the dialogue, but the punchline - which should be the final payoff to the entire joke - just feels.... forced. And, sad to admit, it was - I was writing it up, I got to that last panel, and I realised that I had no idea what Murph's misinterpretation of Gene's pronouncement was going to be! I hadn't entirely written myself into a corner, but the limited options open to me.... weren't exactly brilliant. Without much of a choice, I had to decide on the one that sucked the least (if we stretch the definition of 'least' quiiiiite a bit) and just.... fudge it. It's not even particularly tasty fudge, either, is it? I STILL don't really know what a better bit of dialogue would be, even now; not without entirely rewriting the joke. And why mess with 2003-me's good intentions?
