Surprise! The Synergy-story-with-Artie-and-Gene-in-it was actually an extremely elaborate framing sequence.... for a Cosmos-story-with-Artie-and-Gene-in-it! This wasn't just a cheap excuse to recycle pre-existing Cosmos comics, or only have to write half a story: there is, as you will see in future pages, a very clear reason why I engineered this kind-of-sort-of-crossover; one that links Cosmos circa 2003 (I had only done the Cosmos strips a few months earlier, in fact) and Synergy circa 2003, and at least partly explains how characters in the former ended up in the latter. But we'll come to that....
This time around, we actually find out who our mystery woman is - a Star Trek: Voyager-esque starship captain, no less - and her place in the Synergy power structure, so that's one necessary piece of exposition dealt with, finally! I'm not sure what the 'dots' visible through the hole Gene tears in the comic panel are (twinkling lights in the void? Dust motes?); but if memory serves, I put them in there to differentiate the world inside the comic strip - which has a white background - and that outside the comic strip - which, sans the dots, also has.... a white background. So an expedience, if nothing else. And 'Tooth-painting Disease'? I have no idea what that is, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to catch it!
