Tony may be a fairly simply-drawn (and designed) character, but translating his unusual anatomy and trademark clothing into the Third Dimension took a fair bit of lateral thought. The physical expression of that lateral thought was, of course, concept sketches! I had to examine Tony's physical construction, bodily proportions, facial expressions and poseability (things which I'd normally just take for granted); and see what I might have to take into account when drawing a 'model sheet' suitable for building a 3D model in Maya. His eyes, in particular, gave me pause for thought - would they just be 'painted on' via the vector art skin I'd later apply to the model, or would they be sculpted objects somehow slotted into his face? And how to deal with their 'squidgy right-angle triangle' shape without making him look like a robot? Hmmmm....
